Exhibition: Encompassing the Golden Calf
2019 Basel, Switzerland

Description
This exhibition draws on Jeffrey Shaw's photographic materials that have been scanned and archived in Hong Kong by Raphael Chau. This archive is published online at www.jeffreyshawcompendium.com. Following the schema provided by Shaw, Chau also contributed to the exhibition's selection of photos and crafted the final wall montage for the printer. This encompassing panorama of images recounts and conjoins 96 works created by Shaw and his co-authors from 1996 to 2019.
The exhibition's sole 'object'—the Golden Calf—is a 2018 re-make of the seminal 1994 creation. Constructed by Joseph Chan and coded by Leoson Cheong, it replaces the original's cabled electromagnetic position tracking with the iPad's cable-less gyroscopic motion sensor. Furthermore, while the original version reflected a static photographic image of the exhibition surroundings onto the skin of the Golden Calf, the 2018 version uses four video cameras to make this 360-degree reflection live so it includes the real time of the observer.
